如来藏者离有为相,如来藏常住不变,是故如来藏是依、是持、是建立,世尊!不离、不断、不脱、不异不思议佛法。世尊!断、脱、异外有为法,依持建立者,是如来藏。

“The Tathāgatagarbha is separate from any characteristic of the conditioned. The Tathāgatagarbha is eternal and unchanging. Therefore, the Tathāgatagarbha is the basis, the holder, and the foundation. World-Honored One! It is not separate, not severed, not liberated, and not different from the inconceivable Buddha-dharmas. World-Honored One! That which is severed, liberated, and different from the extrinsic conditioned dharmas, and yet is the basis, holder, and foundation [of the conditioned dharmas] is the Tathāgatagarbha.”

若没有如来藏作所依,一切法都不可能存在,所以如来藏是依。如来藏是持,祂持什么?持五阴,持一切熏习的善、净法种子,也持一切熏习、造作的恶法种子;能持所造作的一切业种,所以祂是持。……再来说“如来藏是建立”:是因为如来藏能建立一切法,如果没有如来藏的实际存在,就没有任何一法可以建立。

If there were no Tathāgatagarbha as the supporting basis,no dharma could exist. The Tathāgatagarbha is the basis;the Tathāgatagarbha is the holder. What does it hold? Itholds the five aggregates and the karmic seeds, includingall wholesome or pure seeds perfumed by wholesome orpure deeds, and all unwholesome seeds by unwholesomedeeds. Therefore, it is called the holder. […] It is said that“the Tathāgatagarbha is the foundation” because it canestablish all dharmas; if it were not for theTathāgatagarbha’s true existence, no dharma could ever beestablished.
