World-Honored One! From now on, until theattainment of Buddhahood, if I see sentient beings whoare lonely, incarcerated, diseased, troubled, andafflicted by various misfortunes and hardships, I willnot forsake them for even a moment, and will committo their security and tranquility; I will leave them onlyafter having benefited them through the Dharma andliberated them from all their sufferings.

Therefore, the ultimate benefit is certainly the benefitwhich comes through the Dharma (lit. the meaning ofthe Dharma). The practice of the four methods ofembracement – giving, using loving words, and soforth – is only an expedient method. Eventually onemust go back to the Buddha dharma. When abodhisattva practices the four methods of embracement, he or she should expediently guidesentient beings to live by the Buddha dharma. This ishe delivering of benefits through the meaning ofDharma, which relieves sentient beings from allsufferings not only in this life but also in future livesas well. Unless the bodhisattva can benefit them assuch, he or she should never forsake them.
